on the eve of another redundant and utterly useless election, i turn on the tv to dumb myself to sleep and accidentally come across some old white guy prattling on with his fingers steepled under his chin about all the issues the candidates haven't paid attention to or given an answer to to his liking. he said something about housing and homelessness, which i didn't quite catch but which is, at least, relevant and important. then he started in about child care.
this is going to make me very unpopular.
i should not be paying, thru my taxes, for your rampantly produced offspring to be in daycare. i have chosen not to reproduce, for many reasons, one of which is actually the fact that i don't wish to spend my money on drooling, hissy-fit-throwing brats. if you choose to give birth to one or two or six little monsters, it's your goddamn problem to look after them. not mine.
oh, i know, you should be rewarded for giving birth and it's your god-given right to have children and it's human nature and so on and so forth. well, good for you. whatever floats your boat. but you should really have to look after them on your own time and your own dollar. i'm sorry day care is expensive. i'm sorry you have to have two incomes to keep your big empty house in the suburbs and your two minivans. but how come no one prepares for having children like they prepare for, say, buying a house or a car? if you decide you want to have kids, save some money so you can afford to stay off work, or put them in daycare, or pay a babysitter a couple of days a week. make plans so that you can take care of the little beasts. don't just pop them out and then whine that the government isn't making it cheap enough for you to take care of them. they're *YOUR* problem. why should i get taxed to pay for your professional babysitting, when i have no intention of ever having to need someone to pay for mine? why does the government have to be responsible for your kids? this shouldn't even be a freaking issue.
